Global Exchange: Traditional Zulu Basket with Lid

Traditional Zulu Basket
with Lid
- $ 80.00
The Fair Trade Traditional Zulu Basket with Lid is a stunning work of art. Made of Ilala grass and traditionally used to store beer and other liquids, each basket is woven in a palette of black, white and tan, but each basket is unique and woven by a different woman. Each basket comes with a signed tag from the weaver.

Made by women from the towns of Vukanathi, Zenzelemi, and Siyaphambili in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Many of the women are the sole bread winners of their families, relying on basket weaving as their main source of income. Several of the older basket weavers from these communities have sent their children to college through the income they earned from basket weaving. These communities work in partnership with Khumbulani Crafts, a non-profit organization, whose mission is to contribute towards poverty alleviation in rural communities through the production, marketing and sale of traditional and contemporary craft.
